VALLEY CITIZENS LEAGUE

A Non-partisan Review of Key Civic Issues

On the eve of Valley Citizens League’s 20th anniversary year, the Board of Directors wants to acknowledge and thank all the members that have helped sustain and advance our public forum efforts. Without the support of civic-minded Arizonans, our mission to advance the public debate in a non-partisan, non-parochial venue would be impossible.

In the past year, VCL has presented Mind Opener lunches featuring such topics as immigration, initiatives, the availability of power to light future growth, high rises in the Valley, health care as a utility, the state budget, sport$ in Arizona and more.

Our members and guests have heard from legislators, lobbyists, business and civic leaders and passionate advocates on all sides of various fences. We are the place -- the only place -- where opposing sides are called to debate critical issues of the day in a civil and solution-oriented format – and where those advocates hear directly from citizens how well their arguments resonate.

Valley Citizens League also commissioned a paper and presentation on mail balloting, which was featured in the Sunday ArizonaRepublic Viewpoints section and available on our website.  Another one, on open primaries, is in the works.

When there were no comprehensive and neutral candidate forums for the Phoenix City Council elections, the VCL stepped forward and, in partnership with ASU and The Arizona Republic, organized them in all competitive districts, drawing more than 500 voters in the primary race alone. More forums are planned, including those focusing on local races, upcoming initiatives, the Presidential debates and “surprise” issues.

While we seek to grow our membership and roles, VCL values those continuing members who have helped us provide that spirited and civil non-partisan, non-parochial examination of important issues.
